About Us

Working dogs have always been a part of Ray's life. Border Collies and Australian Shepherds were used to work, protect and make the 500 acre goat and deer ranch memorable. During hunting season, Runt, an Aussie/Blue Heeler cross was known to sit outside the hunter's cabin and make sure scavengers wouldn't take a hunter's kill hanging from a nearby tree. When Runt passed away in 2008, we needed another dog to complement our needs and those of our rescued Boxer/Red Heeler mix, Dixie.

Dixie stays at home as our protector making sure to warn everyone from the pizza deliveryman to the UPS guy that this is her house, under her watch. She is an obedient people pleaser with an intense focused concentration and a knack for loving everything puppy. However, productively working livestock is not her forte since she barks and scatters them to the ends of earth. With 5 acres in Robertson County and 500 acres in the Texas Hill Country, this was not going to work. Ray needed a companion with a strong work ethic that could face the duties on the ranch and still be able to come into town while being a healthy member of the family.

We have been very fortunate to have many helpful and encouraging Australian Shepherd owners that continue to guide us in the stock and agility arenas. It is with their patient advice and experience that drive us into becoming active ASCA members. Together, Ray and I train our dogs on stock (cattle, sheep/goats and ducks), obedience, rally, and agility. They love the active challenges and we enjoy watching them grow and figure out what is naturally bred into the breed.

The longer we have our Aussies and the more we read up on the breed, the more we realize that Aussies are for us. One of the best things that we enjoy about the breed is their ability to lie down and relax! Yes! They do have an off switch ... even as a puppy. They are great companions, quick learners, socially adept and agile athletes. They make a fabulous all around dog! We crate train to housebreak our dogs and feed them on a regular schedule. They learn early on that they have toys and bones to chew on in place of our shoes. Our beds are ours alone and they do not need to chime in with the other neighborhood dogs. We provide them with love, constant attention, annual check-ups, preventative medications, and an outlet for positive play. In many ways we feel that this structure allows us the ability to have a balanced life where we can all live together peacefully!
